'Barrels and bottles - two love affairs .....of whisky and wine'

Scotland’s Whisky Regions: Speyside, Islay and the Highlands. Scotland is home to some of the world’s most celebrated whisky regions, each with a distinctive character shaped by landscape, climate and tradition. Speyside, Islay and the Highlands stand out as iconic locations where craftsmanship and terroir combine to create unforgettable single malts.

Speyside: Elegant and Fruity Malts

Speyside, nestled around the River Spey, is renowned for smooth, approachable whiskies with rich notes of honey, apple, pear and vanilla. Many of Scotland’s most famous distilleries are found here, producing complex yet gentle drams that appeal to both newcomers and connoisseurs. Speyside whiskies are often matured in sherry casks, adding layers of dried fruit and spice.

Islay/Islands, Campbeltown: Peat, Smoke and Sea Spray

The West Coast Islands, Islay and Campbeltown peninsula are known for their powerful whisky identity. Their malts are typically bold, heavily peated and intensely smoky, with maritime notes of sea salt, iodine and seaweed. The island’s windswept coastline, peat bogs and Atlantic climate shape whiskies that are unmistakable and deeply memorable, ideal for those who enjoy robust, smoky flavours.

Highlands: Diverse and Expansive Character

The Highlands cover a vast and varied area, resulting in an impressive diversity of whisky styles. From light, floral coastal expressions to richer, malty and slightly smoky inland drams, Highland whiskies showcase the full spectrum of Scottish character. This region is perfect for exploring different flavour profiles and discovering new favourites.

From the fruity elegance of Speyside to the smoky intensity of Islay and the broad diversity of the Highlands, Scotland’s whisky regions offer a remarkable journey in aroma and taste. Each sip reflects centuries of tradition, local ingredients and the unique spirit of place.

Japan: Hanyu, the re-awakening

Expanding on a centuries old, family sake business, in 1941, Isouji Akuto established the Hanyu Distillery, quickly becoming one of Japan's premier whisky companies. Sadly due to financial constraints because of a weak domestic market the distillery was closed in 2000 and dismantled by 2004. However, like a phoenix from the flames, Toa Shuzo rebuilt and revived the distillery on it's original site, starting production again in 2021.
